Flickr Commons: Royal Library, Denmark

Posted by Laurie Frost on March 9, 2012

Next up from the Flickr Commons are some public domain images courtesy of the Royal Library, Denmark. One of the three sets in its photostream contains images by photographer Sven Türck (1897-1954) from the 1930s and 1940s. When Türck died, The Royal Library acquired much of his work.

The National Media Museum, Bradford, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom has an eclectic group of subsets in the Flickr Commons. Here are some examples.

The first 4 are among 22 “from two albums entitled ‘Official Australian War Photographs’, produced by the Australian War Records Section, established by the British government in 1917. These photographs are probably the work of official photographers James Francis (Frank) Hurley and George Hubert Wilkins.”

They form a silhouettte against the sky as they pass towards the front line to relieve their comrades, whose attack the day before won Broodseinde Ridge and deepened the Australian advance. Taken October 5, 1917, at Western Front (Belgium), Menin Road Area, Hooge."

It’s hard to know what to place after these — and they are not the starkest and most disturbing of the set of WWI photos in this stream.

But these will do. They are from a group of 16 called, “Don McCullin Selects.” McCullin, a contemporary British photographer, selected these works from the National Media Museum’s collection to accompany an exhibition of his own photos of archaeological remains around the Mediterranean. Other images feature Pompeii, Rome, Greece, and Lebanon.

There are 20 pictures in Kodak No.1 Circular Snapshots, the first point and shoot camera. Introduced in 1888, it produced 2.5″ diameter circular images.

Flickr Commons: National Library of Wales

Posted by Laurie Frost on February 8, 2012

Did you know that there are collections of public domain photos on Flickr?  A diverse group of museums and libraries have contributed some images to the section called The Flickr Commons. In my next set of posts, I will feature selections from some of the collections, particularly those not located in the US since the Library of Congress and US government sites have been used extensively here.

For no particular reason, I’m starting with these from the Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru / The National Library of Wales LIGC/NLW]. The NLW has uploaded some of its P. B. Abery collection of photographs taken mainly between 1890 and 1940 in Radnorshire, the border area of Wales and England. Http under the photos takes you to the Flickr page where you can download the image in several sizes.

These first four photos date from the mid 1870s. You can learn more about the photographer, John Thomas, here.
